Philip Morris T&T Limited conirms the legitimacy of its product L&M, distributed in Trinidad & Tobago.
Sheldon Wood, general manager for Philip Morris T&T.
In response to a recent seizure of cigarettes by the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service and reported by a local television station, we would like to reairm that our cigarette product L&M, the fastest growing cigarette brand distributed in Trinidad & Tobago, is approved by the Tobacco Control Unit (TCU) and is compliant with all the applicable regulations stipulated by this authority of the Ministry of Health.
We have always worked closely with the TCU and reiterate that all our products meet all legal requirements, and we have provided all the necessary documentation and samples. We are deeply concerned over an apparent lack of communication between the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service and the TCU regarding tobacco control regulations, which may be causing these unjustiied seizures.
Philip Morris Trinidad & Tobago Limited (PMTT) adheres to the laws of Trinidad & Tobago and respects the authorities of all of whom we are willing to cooperate with to clarify the situation and avoid any further confusion or inconvenience to our customers.
We also expect the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the TCU convene to verify the legality of our products and return the seized cigarettes.
As the leading tobacco company in the world, we reairm our commitment to providing high-quality products to adult consumers while complying with all local and international regulations.
We are also evaluating the situation with all relevant authorities involved in what it believes to be an illegal seizure of our products, in which case we plan to take legal action.
Finally, we would like to reairm Philip Morris International’s global commitment to ight against illicit trade of tobacco products which undermines tax revenues and local regulations. The ight against illicit trade is possible through cooperation and open communication between public and private sectors with the full compliance of the rule of law and correct enforcement from all parties.
